T640 fans @ 100% when connected to UPS
Hello,
Strange issue discovered with a PowderEdge T640 server, running Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS.
Last week I connected a APC Back-UPS Pro 1500 to the machine power + USB.
Through Ubuntu power management the UPS was detected and graceful shut down options were configured.
However, as soon as the server booted (with only power cord connected through the UPS) the fas started spinning at 100%. Connecting or disconnecting the USB for power management does not affect this issue.
When disconnecting the power cord from the UPS and plugging it directly into the power outlet, all fan issues are gone.
Is this a power/voltage issue supplied by the UPS, where the server goes into some kind of security mode?
Is there a setting to solve this issue, as it would be preferred to hook up the UPS without having the fans trying to get airborne.
UPS Provides 231 V AC, according to it's display.
(as we narrowed down this issue to this I do not think other hardware specs are relevant at this point)

GDYK,
The fans in most Poweredge are controlled by the iDrac/BSM, so I would start with making sure the server is updated to current, specifically on the BIOS, iDrac, as well as the chipset. After that then see if the issue persists, if so then check OpenManage and see if there is a change in base voltage when the cord is plugged in.
Let me know what you see.

Thanks @DELL-Chris H for your reply. Unfortunately due to other priorities this has been waiting for too long.
Currently the server is operating w/o the UPS.
As I am not familiar with updating BIOS or iDrac, I feel not comfortable going along with these procedures.
The server was purchased in april 2018, so I assume all versions should more or less be recent.
Looking at the OpenManage road, it seems the Ubuntu package is no longer available (http://linux.dell.com/repo/community/ubuntu/). I found this (https://oitibs.com/dell-openmanage-on-ubuntu-16-04/) but I am not sure these instructions are still valid.
After seeing the solution on this thread (https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-Hardware-General/Fan-speed-on-T430-at-2760-RPM-constantly-irrespective-of-load/m-p/5166614#M53631) I would like to check the System.ThermalSettings when the UPS is connected. But as it seems this also requires OpenManage.
Detailed user guides for any of the necessary steps to further investigate would be highly appreciated.
(The server was purchased privately for calculative work on a research project)

I would recommend you become familiar if you will be supporting servers. Server updates are not designed to be optional "if it ain't broke, then don't fix it" style updates ... they often fix bugs in performance or reliability, and leaving your system out of date leaves you open to those shortcomings.
