Updating m610 bios from m1000e Chassis

Hi,

I have used this method to update various servers before, but it is failing on this box.

From an m1000e chassis/Server Overview/Update/Bios

the file BIOS_RR08W_WN64_6.4.0 is selected and update is clicked.

The Update Schedule Succeeds, the Job Status goes to New and then Downloading then Failed.

The server has been re-seated in the chassis, but still the update fails.

How else can I get the bios to update without logging in to the O/S directly?

Thx

John Bradshaw

Format a 2GB partition on the flash drive and it should work fine.

Let me know

Turns out that the DRAC firmware was corrupted (It had never been updated and was the original f/ware from a couple of years back). Once the right "repair" file was downloaded all sprang into action.

Thx all,

Bradje1,

There are a couple options to update outside the OS. The easiest is to use this download - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-m610?driverId=4Y5N5&osCode=WS8R2&fileId=3200446185&languageCode=en&categoryId=DI

to create a bootable diagnostic disk. After that is created then download and save this file to the bootable media you created- http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-m610?driverId=RR08W&osCode=WS8R2&fileId=3287627236&languageCode=en&categoryId=BI#

boot to it and then from the menu screen you come to you will exit out. This brings you to a command prompt.  From that command prompt run the update provided.

Let me know how it goes.

Thx Chris.

I am having trouble from the 1st link provided.

The after executing the downloaded file a screen comes up with 6 options 2 of which are:

1 Install to a USB flash Drive

2. Create a Bootable Diskette Set

If I choose 1. then it complains that it cannot format a USB key any larger than 2GB and exits. I haven't seen one of these for years.

2. Doesn't make sense to me. Who has floppy drives?

How can I use 1. with a normal USB key? Thx very much.

Hi,

If the issue is not yet resolved, try the following:

  1. Update the CMC with the latest firmware v4.50
    1. Update the standby CMC first, perform a CMC failover and update the other CMC
    2. http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/4767.cmc-for-m1000e.aspx
  2. Update the iDRAC with the latest firmware v3.50
    1. You can find the firmware on http://support.dell.com, using your Dell Service Tag
    2. Look for "iDRAC6 MODULAR 3.50 release" in the "Embedded Server Management" category
  3. Update your Lifecycle Controller with the latest firmware v1.5.5.12
    1. You can find the firmware on http://support.dell.com, using your Dell Service Tag
    2. Look for "Dell Repair Package V 1.5.5, A00" in the "Lifecycle Controller" category

Now reproduce the issue, by updating the BIOS again. If the issue remains, please generate a RACDUMP of the M1000e chassis. You may be asked for this, when you wish to make a case with us to start troubleshooting.
