Upgrade Memory on R710 (channel question)

I have a R710 server that I need to add more memory to.  It has 72 GB of memory now (6x8GB and 6x4GB) with 2 CPU sockets.  I read that it has 3 channels per CPU so I believe each channel has one 8GB module and 4GB module.

Can I upgrade the memory and put a single additional 8GB module in channel 1 for each cpu without adding memory to channel 2 and 3?

So channel 1 has

2x8GB + 1x4GB

while channel 2, and 3 have

1x8GB + 1x4GB

Would this be a valid memory configuration and that the server should boot no problem?

Yes that would work. Have slots 1,2 and 3 with 8 GB DIMMs and the rest of the slots have 4GB.

So I should buy 6x 4GB dims instead and each channel on both cpu would have 1x8GB and 2x4GB?

Hi GC158,

On the R710 the memory channels have to match in order for it to be a valid configuration and not give an error during POST. So you will need to add more DIMMs to make it a valid configuration.

ftp.dell.com/.../poweredge-r710_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf

page 129 shows the memory configuration rules.

So The proper config would be:

A1,B1,A2,B2,A3,B3,A4,B4,A5,B5,A6,B6 8GB

A7,B7,A8,B8,A9,B9 4GB
