If x4 is so much better than x8 (in performance, in reliability, in power consumption), why does x8 even exist? I don't think the price is much different, is it?

And if you could mix the memories- that is depending on the mobo you are using. But I would say the best way is to increase the total memory size regardless. Respectfully,

Robert,
You say that dell supports mixing memory of different ranks. I have a T110 here with 2 x 2Gb 2rx8 installed.
I want to upgrade the memory with 4 x 4Gb 2Rx4. Server boots but the screen stay's black?
any idea?

No, you can't. If you use together, the server will detect an error.
