Hi i want to purchase dell r720 with x16 backplane.
If i want to use JBOD non raid card (not the onboard H710) how can i connect it to that backplane since each port on the card usually supports only 4 drives. backplane has 2 ports but 16 drives ?
Do i need to get one with x8 backplane ?

so if i want to use IT mode M1015 which supports up to 32 drives i just run the two cables from the card to each port on the x16 backplane and the built in sas expanders will take care of all the drives ?

It uses an built-in SAS expander for the additional drives.
Because the H710 does not support JBOD, if you must use JBOD, you will need to use a different controller, running SAS cables from the backplane to the new controller.
