Bios Update on R510 with ESX 4.1
Hi there,
I would like to do a Bios update from 1.6.3 to 1.9.0 on my R510 Servers. I have ESX 4.1 running with many Win 2008 R2. How do I perform this? I guess I cannot just run the EXE on my virtual Windows?!
thanks in advance

There are a couple options. If you just want to update the BIOS you can do so by attaching it via Virtual Media in the Drac, if you have the enterprise. Or you can also boot to the USC (F10 at splash screen). If you would prefer to update the entire server I have a detailed email walk through I can send you to update everything from the host..
Let me know what you would prefer.

Hi Chris,
update the entire server would be great, there is also a new version of the iDRAC firmware. I would appreciate it if you could send me the walkthrough.

1. Create NFS share.
2. Install Dell Repository Manager for servers on Your Win VM
3. Download all pathes
4. Copy them to NFS share (export as SUU repository folder)
5. Boot the server off Dell Service DVD (bootable), mark only Firmware/BIOS updates (no prepare for OS or so)
6. Pick up NFS server and folder, then apply fixes
I used:
- NFS method
- Windows EXE method
- Dell deployment bootable ISO created by Dell Repository Manager
all methods work, but sometimes they miss some firmware updates (example: for DVD drive or hardware RAID controller).
