Since the server supports PC2100 memory, it is likely that it cannot handle PC3200. Memory will usually work a step or two above the supported spec, BUT not always.
If you are trying to update the system firmware from bootable media, you need to boot to the SBUU (Systems Build and Update Utility), choose Update Firmware, then insert the SUU (Server Update Utility - Dell Server Updates) DVD.
Thanks for the leads. I shouldnt have made so far an evolution based on assumptions. Do you have a solution for updating firmware and supporting bios and drivers from floppy or cd? usb is funny old school and too much to workaround. Thanx.
Thanks flash your my hero haha ;-) I have stock slim line. But Im running linux. I tried to flash with floppy but floppys arent made to standard anymore... its quite sad actually the state of over the counter recordable media nowadays.

The 2600 does not boot to USB devices anyway.
