Clean install Windows 2000 on PE 2500

Hi

I am currently trying to do a clean install on a PowerEdge 2500. The Dell Open Manage assistant was not much use. I tried to install Windows and when it rebooted, it said "A boot disk was not found even though you created a virtual disk.......... You should reboot your system and enable the BIOS on the RAID controller."

Then I tried to create a utility partition, which came up with "There is no free space available at the beginning of any disk to create a utility partition." So, i decided to do a clean install from the Windows 2000 CD. When prompted, I pressed F6 and added the Adaptec AIC-7899 Ultra SCSI 160 drivers, along with the Dell PERC 3Q drivers. Then Windows states that it cannot find any drives?????

I have an exact same mirrored server, which I pulled the drivers off, but still Windows will not pick it up!!

It is running Embedded SMFR 5.43, with the Primary system backplane controller firmware being 1.29 and the BIOS is A04.

The Array is working fine and has four disks stripping using RAID 5 forming a logical drive of 101.8 gig.

The help desk said that it is just a case of getting the right driver for the PERC raid card. I have tried alot of drivers, but I am thinking about installing every single one, in the hope that one of them will work!

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, with a Mince pie going to the person who solves my problem! ;o)

Hi,

The problem here is either the incorrect driver or the array is corrupt. This server did not ship from Dell with a raid controller installed. IF you installed a Dell raid controller, it would have been an Adaptec based Perc 3/di or the LSI based Perc 3/sc, 3/dc or 3/qc. Actually, the messages you report lead me to believe the array may be corrupt.

This is the latest driver and firmware for the Adaptec based Perc 3/di:
PERC2, 2/Si, 3/Si, 3/Di, Driver, 2000, v. 2.7.1.4944, A12
Filename: w2ka12dr.exe [211 KB]

Adaptec PERC3/Di, Firmware, PowerEdge 2500 / 2500SC, v. 2.7.1.3170, A05
Filename: BL317005.exe [875 KB]

This is the latest driver and firmware for the LSI based Percs:
LSI Logic, Driver, Windows 2000, v.5.42, A01
CERC ATA 100, Perc 4/DC, 4/Di, 4/SC, 3/DC, 3/DCL, 3/QC, 3/SC
FileName:  PERC-CERC-W2K-5.42-A01.exe [120 KB]
Release Date:  8/28/2003
http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?releaseid=R63411

LSI Logic (formerly AMI) PERC3/DC, 3/DCL, 3/QC, 3/SC, Firmware, v.1.92, A23
FileName:  PERC3-FW-1.92-A23.exe [0 MB]
Release Date:  8/28/2003
http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?releaseid=R63252

I would also recommend the latest System Upgrades:
Dell Server System BIOS, PowerEdge 2500 / 2500SC, A06
FileName:  PE2500-BIOSA06.exe [521 KB]
Release Date:  5/6/2003
http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R58355

Dell ESM Firmware, PowerEdge 2500 / 2500SC, A54
Filename: a54cust.exe (405 KB)
http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?ReleaseID=R32072
Note: Extract the files to a DOS bootable floppy disk. Boot the server to this floppy disk, and run smflsh.exe.
