Cloning SBS 2008 74GB array to 143GB array

Over the weekend I tried to clone our OS SCSI array to a larger array for some more space on the drive. (Dell power edge 2900)

I used clonezilla as it has worked quite nicely on PC's and such with no trouble, I've done very similar clones. From one partition to a larger partition (expanding it).

Here is what I did:

Installed the new 174GB hdd’s paired them into RAID-1 (mirror)

Formatted array and booted to Clonezilla and attempted to clone the OS partition, the operation started and finished within a few seconds.

Booted back to ‘SBS’ Clonezilla had created some odd partitions.

Re-formatted and tried process again. Same result.

Re-formatted and cloned disk to disk setting the partitions to expand to the full size of the disk.

This seemed to work, booted to ‘SBS’ and checked that data had been correctly copied, all seemed to be well.

Turned off the Server, removed the old OS disks and booted, had to delete the RAID cache first.

Booted from the new drives, and failed to load winstart.exe, tried to do a repair and it couldn’t locate any of the files.

Replaced the old OS disks, and the 1TB drives and re-booted to ‘SBS’

Has anyone done something similar with or without success? Have people used other software?

First, winstart.exe appears to be malware, take care of that on the original raid. Then run chkdsk /f on the original raid, then clone.

Personally I use Acronis and never had a failure.

Could you give me a brief run through of what settings you used within acronis to clone an OS array?

Do you clone and then expand the partition?

I would love to be able to buy Acronis but I can't afford to.

About all I can stretch to is Easeus partition manager, Has anyone used this?

My plan is now to clone directly and expand the partition.....will this work?

"My plan is now to clone directly and expand the partition.....will this work?"

Sorry , but you can't expand the partition on the new array to use the remaining space of the new drive with raid 1, it is either expand it on the fly or create another separate volume from the remaining space of the new array ; without expansion on the fly ability the cloning process creates the same volume size on the new array.

EASEUS  expands to use the full array size, cheaper but I have not used it, the trail version my do it for free, perhaps someone will chime in to verify the trail version will expand on the fly....

Paragon trial, may work

According to this link  EASEUS will work..
