Same here. It would appear that Debian is not "sata friendly". I have found the Red Hat variants (including CentOS, Whitebox, and Startcom) to work picture-perfect with the sc420.

When you run the install, at the boot prompt, type "linux26" to load linux with the 2.6.8 kernel.

That should get you going as well as load the tg3 drivers for the Broadcom Network adapter.

If your install still doesn't see it, drop to command prompt and type "modprobe ata_piix".
