How to boot w/o keyboard and mouse attached, plug them in later?

Hi,

I manage a large number (>40) of PE 2450/2550/2650 servers running W2K.  I don't have the luxury of a KVM switch, and I can't keep keyboards and mice attached to all of them simultaneously (no room).  I use PCAW for remote console access typically.

Sometimes I need real console access.  (Say when PCAW locks up).  I've noticed that often when I plug in a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, the server doesn't seem to "see" them -- the server doesn't respond to keyboard entries or mouse motion.

I'm wondering if there is any way to set these servers up so that keyboards and mice can be attached "ad hoc", or is there any sort of special plug I need to buy or make to plug into these ports when there's not a real keyboard or mouse attached?

I have the same probelm with my PowerEDge 2650. The screen is black and the server will not respond to the mouse or the keyboard if it was rebooted without them.

I solved this with a wireless USB Keyboard and Mouse combo, about $80. Never figured out the PS/2 kb and mouse.

Another piece of software which is similar to PCAW and is more stable is Virtual Network Computing (VNC).  Seems to be more stable...

BTW, if your server is on a network you can just run the MMC console and select the services for that particular server and restart PCAW.

Good Luck!
