How to install Server 2008 on R710

I installed Server 2008 from DVD onto a new R710 then hunted down needed drivers.  There are still a bunch of unknown devices showing up in Device Manager.  The "Dell" way to install and OS always seemed confusing to me.  If I go to the drivers & downloads page for the R710/ Server 2008 x64.

Under the System Mgmt tab there is:

  • Windows OS install support pack
  • DVD ISO - System Service & Diag Tools
  • System Build & Update Utility
  • Dell Server Updates
  • DVD ISO - Dell Systems Mgmt Tools

I clicked on Windows OS install support pack, but see this message under Decription:  "This package is not required with the Systems Management Tools and Documentation web download/media. "  If I expand Installation Instructions, the last step is "Make it available to the Systems Build And Update Utility when prompted".

So I am totally confused.

What is the "best practices" way of installing Server 2008?  Ideally I would like to see no unknown devices under Device Manager.

Thanks,

-John

Well, it is fairly self-explanatory ONCE you get going with it.  The Systems Management Tools and Documentation DVD contains the System Build and Update Utility, along with some other goodies.  This DVD would have also come with the machine.  You simply boot to it and run SBUU, selecting to Install OS.  It will ask you some very simple questions about your setup, then prompt you for your 2008 DVD.  If your system came with those disks, there is no reason to download GB's of ISO's.

Alternatively, you can use the USC (Universal Server Configurator) to install the OS directly from a BIOS utility that has all the needed drivers loaded into it.  Should be in the Utilities option during POST (where you also see the F2 for System Setup prompt).

Doing it your way will work too, it is just more work.  As you did not use the SMTD, you may be able to use the OS Support Pack.  If not, start with the Chipset drivers, and begin installing each individually, as downloaded from the Support site.

If you need help with certain drivers - which device is which, etc. - let me know.

Thanks.  This DVD worked like a champ.  All of the devices showed up under Device Manager.  I still needed to download the Intel network driver for the VT Quad port ethernet adapter which allow me to enable link aggregation.
