Hyper-V virtual server with Dell media?

I am going to purchase an R410 PowerEdge with Windows Server 2008 R2.  I plan to run the Hyper-V role on the server and install one Server 2008 R2 VM for now.  Can I use the Dell recovery media to create the VM?  Normally I would buy a volume license and the Server 2008 R2 license would be good for one physical and one virtual server.  Does this still hold true for Dell installed operating systems?

Thank you.

Hello nonasdad

Yes, you can use an OEM DVD to create VM's. This document does a good job of explaining the process:

If you have any questions or issues let us know.

Thanks

Yes, you can use Dell OEM media to install both a physical machine and a virtual machine on a Dell server; you will receive two Product Keys, one for the physical machine (which you shouldn't need to enter manually), and one to install to activate a virtual machine.

BUT ...

The number and use of the physical and/or virtual machines depends on which version of 2008 R2 you purchase.

If using Standard, you can install one instance as the Hyper-V Host, and one instance as a VM Guest, BUT you may only use the physical instance to run and manage Hyper-V - no other server roles may be assigned (Domain Controller, Web Server, etc.).

If using Enterprise, you can have up to 4 VM's; if running 4 VM's a physical instance my also be running, again, for the sole purpose of managing the VM's.

If using Datacenter, you can have an unlimited number of VM's and a physical instance.
