Install Issues : PE4300 and Windows 2003
I'm trying to install Windows 2003 on one of our PowerEdge 4300/450s. I had some initial issues, but after reading previous threads on the forum, thought I had resolved them. However, I still cannot complete the install.
Have updated the BIOS, and ESM.
Since this server was previously running OpenBSD, I low-leveled all of the drives in the array.
Windows setup starts, and I press F6 to load a third party driver.
When prompted, I insert a disk for the RAID driver.
I am currently using an older driver that we used for Win2k - MEGARAID 2000.
Install continues and copies files to the system. LEDs on RAID show drive activity. System reboots, and I end up with a system error... ALT-CTRL-DEL.
Have seen something like this before, and it turned out to be the RAID driver.
On boot, I'm seeing:
PowerEdge RAID II Controller BIOS 1.63
(c) AMERICAN MEGATRENDS, INC.
From what I can tell, this is the "AMI PERC" device listed on the website.
Am I missing something?
Feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
There are 3 issues which are involved here.
1. The Perc II is not validated for use with Win2003 by Dell or Microsoft; however it can be made to work using the Win2000 driver (as reported on these forums).
(AMI) PERC II, 2/SC, 2/DC, Driver, Win2000, v. 2.68, A03
Filename: W2k268A.exe (47 KB)
http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?ReleaseID=R25714
2. The Perc II firmware must be at the latest revision:
Perc II - Firmware, v. U84/C81, A02
File Name: PERCU84.exe
http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?ReleaseID=R15115
3. The boot array container on the Perc II must not be more than 12Gb. Subsequent data arrays do not have this limitation.
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums!

Have you tried just letting Windows install without installing 3rd party drivers? I installed on my 4300 and didn't do anything but let Windows do its thing & it works great. I created 2 partitions at the beginning of the install (when Windows asks where to install), 10GB & 60GB, and that's it.
I do have one issue. I'm getting a "Base System Device" under "Other Devices" in Device Manager that has the yellow doohickey on it & I have no idea what it is. I also updated all F/W and BIOS and can't get this thing to install. I don't guess I really need it since everything works, just one of those pet peeves I have.

Hi Thom,
The Base System Device could either be the Scsi Backplane or possibly a Dell Remote Assistant Card (DRAC).
If the device is the DRAC, loading the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator will load the drivers. The DRAC will only be installed in PCI slot 4.
Dell OpenManage Server Administrator, 2000, 2003, v.1.4, A03
FileName: om34_win_managed_system_A03.exe [137 MB]
Release Date: 6/2/2003
http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R61476
Server Administrator Documentation:
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/software/svradmin/1.4/en/index.htm
If the device is the Scsi Backplane, this driver should resolve the issue.
Dell Backplane, Utility, Windows 2000, v. X05, A03
Filename: BP-A03.zip (6 KB)

Thanks Mark! It was the DRAC and the driver installed off the OM CD when I let it search long enough. And, the link for the OM download was VERY helpful since all the versions I've found so far DO NOT support and won't even install on a PE4300. Thanks again.

I had no problem with the install or anything, just OM software. I have a Mylex controller that did not come from Dell. I realized the OM and array software wasn't going to work, but still can't see the controller even with the array mgr software from LSI/Mylex.
Thanks,
Thom
