Installing Windows 2000 Server on a PowerEdge 2800

Hi,

We took delivery of a new Dell PowerEdge 2800 server the otherday.

I have finally got round to configuring it now i have encountered the following problem!

I put the Server asistant cd into the drive and it loads that fine, I follow the wizard for install new OS - I Select Windows 2000 - (It says it only tested on service pack 4)

When it restarts it copes the files as expected, restartas agiain.

Now firstly it strats the setup and gets the following error: about the class nable to be run due to a read problem in the memory!

Secondly, after prssing ok it oes onto do plug and play devices, that completes fine. However it then has an error c0020017 with regard to setting up the sytem security!

On clicking close it simply restarts!

Is this happening becase I'm usign service pack 2 isntead of 4?

If so, how can i get the newer CD with service pack 4 on it - ie for the installation?

Regards,

I am having exactly the same problem, tried two different win2k CDs already because I first thought it might be a damaged CD.. no luck yet. Can anybody help?

Hi,

Just to say that I didn't get mine to work with windows 2000 server.....I expect you need a service pack 4 on the disk that installs windows. - That is just a guess however.

I have installed Windows 2003 Server instead now, and that worked fine!

Best of luck.

I posted about this in a previous thread; in my case it was indeed a service pack problem.

I purchased 2000 Advanced server from a store somewhere on the east coast, and the install cd came with no service packs installed. When I slipstreamed SP4 into the install cd, installation went through without a hitch.

Hope that helps,

How does one slipstream Service Pack 4 into the Installation CD?

I have found this website provides a clear set of instructions for slipstreaming a service pack:

Having spoken with Dell and Microsoft, the problem is in an incompatibility between Server Assist and Windows 2000 Server (Service Packs 3 or older).   Few options exist:

1.  Find a Service Pack 4 CD (or download it)
2.  Opt for 2003 or 2005.

I even tried loading directly from the Windows 2000 CD and had troubles there as well.

Hi,

The problems you are experiencing when trying to load Windows 2000 Server straight off an older disk, is not the server install assistant, but actually the fact that the drivers for SATA hardisks are not there, therefore it cannot istall it (it was designed for old servers with ide harddisks)

Hope that helps,

Yes! Thanks everybody here! The autostreamer provided easily the 2000 sp4 being streamed to the install cd. Then install process went with no errors! 0x77fcac1 0x58544850 LsaOpenPolicy error c0020017
