Linux not seeing scsi devices

I have serveral new Dell Power Edge servers in a rack. I have installed RH E4 on each. I also have a rack mount scsi tape drive (Power Vault 114t w/ ultrim3 LTO)that I am try in to use Amanda to backup the rack. My problem is that the RH E4 is not "seeing" the tape drive. The tape drive is attached to an Adaptec 39160 controller.

I have tried this on two different servers on the rack (a PE1850 and a PE2850) with the same results. When the machine boots the scsi utilities scan for devices and sees the tape drive. However after booting if you do "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" the listing only contains the disk array and the array back plane. There are issues with using the array controller for other devices so as I said I have installed a new Adaptec 39160 controller and attached the tape device to it.

I downloaded and a rpm for the aic7xxx driver. The rpm installed without a problem, but did not fix the situation.

Anybody know a fix, or have a suggestion of what to do next ?

Thanks
Sherman

is the 39160 visable in /proc/scsi?

November 15th, 2006 18:00

No this is what I get.

[root@portal_dev]ls /proc/scsi
device_info scsi sg

I also used the Hardware Browser and in the SCSI Devices section it lists:

Adaptec AHA-3960D / AIC7899A U160M
Adaptec AHA-3960D / AIC7899A U160M

I believe that hese are the scsi adaptors on the card, although the model number is mangled.

I don't see your SCSI controller in /proc/scsi/scsi or in dmesg. can you show me your /etc/modprobe.conf?

alias usb-controller1 uhci-hcd
alias scsi_hostadapter1 megaraid_mm
alias scsi_hostadapter2 megaraid_sas
alias eth0 e1000
alias eth1 e1000
alias scsi_hostadapter3 aic7xxx

Did you remake your initrd after adding in the alias scsi_hostadapter3 aic7xxx to your modprobe.conf and reboot?

November 20th, 2006 17:00

Eric,

No.

Is this something I need to do? How?

mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r`

This should update  your initial ramdisk with information from your modprobe.conf file. It will override the existing version of your initrd for running kernel.
Those are back ticks in the command, not single quotes.
