POP access for exchange server 2003

OK,
I have a client that I have set up exchange server 2003 on a Poweredge 1850 for e-mail.  THe web access is set up and works fine and they can VPN onto the network from home to access their e-mail but some of their employees use alternate platforms at home (Mac and linux) and they want to be able to use POP e-mail from home.

I have set up exchange server to allow POP access but we are having trouble getting outside POP access to work.  The error message says "can't connect to server" and I think that it is an error in the way the server name is specified.  I have been told that the server name must be in the format "domainname\username\folder".  Is this correct? and is there a guide to configuring outside POP access for exchange server?

I have searched here and on the MS site to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.

P.S.  The Mac OS X actually has an option in their e-mail program setup to access an exchange server but we can't get that to work either (it seems to be related to a server name issue too)

1.) Are you trying to connect to the internal IP of the POP3 server or the external?

1a.)Internal(via VPN) - Then, on the properties of the POP3 Virtual server, on the General Tab - are you listening on "All unassigned" IPs?

1b.)External - Then, is your firewall passing TCP port 110 and 995?

2.)On the access Tab of the POP3 VirtServ properties, in connection control: Are you blocking  VPN ranges from connecting? I believe by default this setting is "locked down".

I have been told that the server name must be in the format "domainname\username\folder".

SERVERNAME? Should be internal IP of the mail server, or the FQDN of the server as it is seen on the Internet - the latter would require firewall allowances. Stick with the VPN and internal IP approach if you can.

If you select your POP3 VirtServer, in the MMC Help menu is a link to "Help on Exchange POP3", or something like that if I remember correctly. Most of my experience is with Exchange 2000, so they may (probably) have moved things
around and changed names to support the slow-witted and to trick those already in-the-know (it's a fun game). :)

You should get better answers from a Microsoft or at least Exchange-specific forum. This is a Dell forum. Check out http://www.experts-exchange.com - Or, if in the Ohio area - I'm for hire. :)

Good luck -
Ben

Thanks for the info.
The access is from external and the ports that you mentioned are blocked.
I'll unblock them and try again.

Thanks for the exchange forum address too.
I found microsoft help to be rather less than useful.
