5.       Spare Parts and Upgrades

1.       What type and size memory can I install in my system?

The PowerEdge 1600SC will support up to four (4) 72-bit ECC registered DDR266 SDRAM DIMMs in 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB capacities for a total system memory capacity of 4GB.

2.     &nbspWhat memory features does the PowerEdge 1600SC support?

ECC -- Error Checking and Correcting support means that the system can detect and correct any single-bit memory errors that may occur.

3.       Memory Module Installation Guidelines

Starting with the connector nearest the side of the system board, the memory module sockets are labeled "DIMMA" through "DIMMD" (see Figure 5-3 of the Service Manual). Follow these guidelines when installing memory modules:

When you install memory modules, install the first module in connector DIMMA before installing additional modules in connectors DIMMB, DIMMC, and DIMMD.

Install modules in decreasing order of size, beginning with connector DIMMA.

Table 4-1 of the Service Manual lists sample memory configurations based on these guidelines.

More information can be found in the Removing and Replacing Parts section of the PowerEdge 1600SC Service Manual

4.       Why Does my operating system only see 256MB available memory?

A function called " OS Install Mode" is currently enabled in the system BIOS.

This function limits the amount of system RAM available to the operating system to 256MB, and is necessary for installations of older operating systems to complete.

More information on this function and how to enable/disable OS Install Mode can be found in the Users Guide.

5.       Spare Parts and Upgrades

Note: Non-registered and Non-ECC DIMMs are NOT supported in the PowerEdge 1600SC.

Below are Dell part numbers for various DIMMs we offer for the 1600SC:

311-2376     &nbsp128MB (1X128MB),266MHz
311-2377     &nbsp256MB (1X256MB),266MHz
311-2378     &nbsp512MB (1X512MB),266MHz
311-2379     &nbsp1GB (1X1GB),266MHz

Please note that the contents of the above part numbers are subject to change over time, as is availability of those parts. We recommend contacting our Spare Parts department at 1-800-372-3355 for pricing, availability, and purchasing of all the above parts.
