PowerEdge 600SC Memory Questions

1.       What type and size memory will my system support?

2.       What memory features does the PowerEdge 600SC support?

3.       Memory Module Installation Guidelines

4.       Why Does my operating system only see 256MB available memory?

5.       Spare Parts and Upgrades

1.       What type of memory will my PowerEdge 600SC support?

The PowerEdge 600SC has four 72-bit (168-pin) sockets for DDR memory modules which will support DIMM sizes from 128MB to 1GB, for a maximum of 4GB RAM, depending on the motherboard / processor configuration.

These modules must be PC1600 (DDR-200) or PC2100 (DDR-266) compliant ECC-Registered DIMMs.
Originally, the PowerEdge 600SC server series shipped with motherboards that supported a 400Mhz Front-Side Bus (FSB), Shortly after development and shipping of the PowerEdge 600SC, a new motherboard design was offered, which accommodates a 533Mhz FSB.

To determine the FSB speed configuration, enter System Setup during the boot-up process by pressing the F2 function key as prompted. Look for the CPU Information section.

More information on viewing this information in System Setup can be found here.
The systems with the 400MHz FSB configuration supports both PC1600 (DDR-200) or PC2100 (DDR-266) memory.

The systems with the 533MHz FSB configuration supports only PC2100 (DDR-266) memory.

Note Non-registered and Non-ECC DIMMs are NOT supported in the PowerEdge 600SC.

2.       What memory features does the PowerEdge 600SC support?

The PowerEdge 600SC memory interface supports single-bit correction (ECC).

ECC
Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) support means that the system can detect and correct any single-bit memory errors that may occur without interruption of service.

3.       Memory Module Installation Guidelines

For optimum performance, install the memory modules starting with the first connector (farthest from the microprocessor and located at the top of the system) and leave no open connectors between installed memory modules.

More information on Memory Module Installation can be found here in the PowerEdge 600SC Service Manual.

4.       Why Does my operating system only see 256MB available memory?

A function called " OS Install Mode" is currently enabled in the system BIOS. This function limits the amount of system RAM available to the operating system to 256MB, and is necessary for installations of older operating systems to complete.

More information on this function and how to enable/disable OS Install Mode can be found here.
