Problem installing a BDC (Please respond immediately)
hi,
I m installing NT 4.0 server (BDC) but for some reasons, when I give the domain name & the information required for the BDC to join the domain it gives the error - Domain Controller not found.
the domain which is to be linked with this machine is located somewhere else, there is a router for the connection.
I have installed each & every necessary network protocols - tcp/ip, nwlink ipx/spx, netbeui.
I have also installed network adapter 3com fast etherlink XL server (3c980) - Dell Poweredge server.
I have even installed network services - IIs 2.0, RPC configuration, Netbios Interface, workstation, server.
My main aim is to make this server able to backup the domain which is located somewhere else & also act as a backup server on LAN in my office which is having 5 PDCs & more than 20 workstations.
thanks,
ANKIT

1. On a different computer on the same hub, try to ping the PDC.
2. If successful, ensure you are using the proper network drivers.
3. Try swapping ports on the hub.
4. Ensure you typed the domain properly.
5. Ensure you are using the proper Default Gateway and Subnet mask.

Hi there. Ran into a similar problem while bringing up a Latitude D600 with a Broadcom NIC as an NT4 BDC. Not only did the install hang during the TCI/IP install (won't go into how I fixed this as it doesn't seem to apply to your case...) when I finally did get to where I could configure TCP/IP, I would get the Domain not found message.... While you indicated you had configured TCP/IP with IP address, DNS, etc., didn't see that you specifically mentioned WINS.
I could bring the system up as a PDC or as a member server, but not as a BDC. Found an obscure reference buried deep in one of the hundreds of references/forums I researched that mentioned that the BDC uses the WINS service to find the PDC and to do what is necessary to configure itself as a BDC. We don't run the WINS service on our network.
The fix is to either enter the PDC address in the First WINS Server address (Click on the WINS tab) while configuring the TCP/IP properties, or import an LMHOST file that includes the information... Once this info was entered, the system install as a BDC continued on with no more problems.
Hope this helps......
