Small Business Server 2003

May have bought the wrong OS. I got a new Poweredge with SBS2003 for the purpose of running Sql Server. It is currently running on Win2000. The network is a small workgroup - don't need a domain controller. Also don't need a dns server, an exchange server or any of the rest of the bells and whistles. If I try to demote the server to a standalone, it wants to shut down with an error - must be a domain controller.

What are my options? I need this machine to be on the same workgroup as some robotics that will be hitting the sql server. I dont' mind that it's a PDC if it will still work as I need it.

Any help appreciated.

I believe you may have purchased the wrong operating system if you only need a member server w/ SQL server only.
I would recommend contacting customer service and working out a solution with them.

I need a domain controller if I have a domain. This is just a workgroup. No server, no logins. I now have 2 machines running win2K. Neither is a domain controller. Both are running SQL Server 2K.

you definitely have the wrong OS -

SBS is designed to be a DC - in a single DC domain.  If you don't need a domain - then you bought a lot more software than you need.  What's more - I don't think sbs can be configured as a workgroup (non-dc).

You might benefit from a domain - but if you definitely don't want one, you've got the wrong OS.

Although if you are a small workgroup SBS 2003 Premium Edition should be cheaper than Windows Server 2003 Standard + SQL Server 2000 Standard Licences.

I have never done this but you should be able disable the Exchange Services (to free up ram) allow file server access and SQL Server access to non-authenticated users and will give you room to grow if you need the other SBS Services.

Thanks, that's what I'm planning depending on what Dell gets back to me with. We already owned Sql server 2000. Being removed from an old Win2K machine and loaded onto new server. Disabling Exchange wasn't a problem.

Thanks all
