T605 server OS upgrade

I have a T605 with Server 2003 R2.  It recently took a dive so I had to install a new server.  In the mean time, I brought it back to life.  It was purchased in July 2009.  It has a Windows Server 2008 std product key on the sticker.  It was loaded with Server 2003 R2.  Now that it is out of service, I want to upgrade it to Server 2008 R2.  Can it be done?

I tried the Microsoft Eval download.  It is not seen on boot up.  It give me an error stating it is not compatible with this unit if I click on the setup.exe program on the CD.  I tried running it both ways with a drive on a SATA port and completely off the RAID Card and backplane with them unplugged.  I try to set up a new install with the DELL supplied 2003 CD's on a spare drive in hopes to upgrade to 2008.  The 2003 install CD's get to about 30 seconds in the copying windows files and BSOD.

Any ideas?

Completely stumped

2003 blue-screens because it needs the chipset driver.

I don't believe you can "upgrade" with the Eval version. BOOT to that DVD for the install, then load the following driver for the chipset (onboard SATA for optical drive) when prompted:

http://downloads.dell.com/chipset/BROADCOM_HT1000-HT1100-CHIPS_A00_R234305.exe

You will need to run the driver to extract the files before use.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I wanted to try the eval since it has choice options (Std, Enterprise, etc), and 180 days to activate.  When you say "BOOT to that DVD for the install", which do you mean?  2003?  I am guessing so, since the server does not even see the 2008 dvd.  Since I have another server in place, I have time to play.  This is the first major server I have had, so I will take any guidance.  Thanks

No, boot to the 2008 DVD. I don't think you can perform an "in-place" upgrade with the 2008 Eval software - you need to do a clean install with it, so you can't run it from within the 2003 OS - you need to BOOT to the DVD to install 2008. If the server doesn't recognize the 2008 DVD when trying to boot from it, then it was either created incorrectly or your server doesn't have a DVD drive.

I agree and am on the same page as you.  The server has a DVD player, which does work.  The interesting thing is the replacement Dell server had a DVD drive that did not work.  I had to use this one to load the OS in the new one.

I tried three different Boot disks.  A TDK DVD+R and a Memorex DVD-R, and a Sony DVD+R RW burned as a flash drive but session ended for the heck of it.  I am going to try another burn.  I did read that it should be the DVD-R disk.  Maybe my burn went bad.

I have a drive that I can use for experimenting.  I will keep my two RAID 1 drives with 2003 OS out of the server, since I know they work.  They will be my fail safe if this does not go my way.  I did grab the chipset drivers just in case and the RAID card firmware is up to date.
