Testing Email Alerts on iDrac 8

I am trying to test email alerts on iDrac 8. Currently I have every checkbox checked for "Email" and "Remote System Log" in the Alert Configuration window (see below).

Afterwards I entered in a few different codes from the below reference manual in the Test Event section.

Event and Error Message Reference Guide for 13th Generation Dell PowerEdge ServersVersion 1.2

I am not receiving any email alerts. I don't know if there is a issue with the port, the config, the authentication, etc. I don't see any error logging or error messages so its difficult to troubleshoot. Can anyone offer any advice on how to troubleshoot this?

There really needs to be a way to generate / test log messages.

Please submit this as feedback / future improvements to the proper Dell Engineering team.

Hello @ThePieMonster,

Welcome to the Community!

Ok, let's try to go step by step with all the configuration. This article contains all the information about the configuration: Dell iDRAC - Configuring Email notifications for System Alerts on iDRAC7/8 and iDRAC9?

Please, can you check and let me know if you get stuck in any step?

Regards.

Well, I can see a problem here. Gmail its not a supported option. An internal smtp server is required, however someone may have figured how to make it work. Let me look for it...

I found this old topic in the Community. I hope it helps you:

Switched to a internal SMTP server using a internal send from and internal send to email address's.

Getting a "sending the test mail failed" error message when trying to test send a mail. Any logs for troubleshooting this?

Hello,

can you check in the mail server logs if there are some errors? If nothing logged on the mail server they are not communicating.

Also in the iDRAC web interface, under network setting, can you please put a name on Static DNS domain name?

Thanks

Marco

So by checking the "mail server logs" you mean the internal mail server logs. iDrac itself has no logging or tests to see if it can communicate successfully on its own?

You can check also in the idrac log, but it is just to know if it can reach mail server or not.

Thanks

I believe this is the correct place to be checking, however I see no mail logs in here. I ran through the "send mail" test a few times to make sure something would be generated but don't see anything.

I just tested this, sending a test mail does not create an iDRAC log entry.

Is there way to get to the Command Line Interface (CLI) in iDrac? I am looking around in the portal and have not found anything such as a window that would like you issue commands that would be written by a user.

I am thinking maybe there is something wrong with the authentication piece here. iDrac really needs to have some way of testing these different components. Is there anyway to test authentication?

Using internal Exchange Server / Outlook.

Hello,

no you cannot get to he CLI of the iDRAC. What you can do is to send RACADM cli command to the idrac, here the documentation:

https://dell.to/3niRP11

what do you mean something wrong with the authentication?

Thanks

In iDrac there is a "enable authentication" piece under the SMTP settings. Is this using basic authentication or Kerberos authentication? iDrac can talk the mail server, however mail is not being sent so trying to figure that bit out.
