Unexpected reboot while using notepad.
I have 60+ PowerEdge 2550s running W2K, they were not all bought at the same time.
On 4 of them, if I use notepad, word pad or text pad to view text documents they reboot (no blue screen, no warning). If I switch boxes with a different box the problem goes away. I have updated the bios, cleared the cmos memory by removing the battery and still it reboots. If I leave it alone and do nothing it will run forever but I can't look at the logs.
The MB rev is A06 on the one here in front of me, I don't know about the others as they are at the datacenter.
Any Ideas
Chris

I have a PE2650 runnning Win2K/SP4 that randomly rebooted, without warning, without any BSOD, and without anything logged in OMSA. It didn't matter what was going on with the server- backups, network traffic, someone directly logged on- it just rebooted whenever it wanted. For about 2 months, it would reboot once per day, about once every 2 weeks. During the past few weeks, it would reboot every day, sometimes 2-3 times per day. This was extremely frustrating, as a server is no good to me if it will not stay powered on.
The Windows system event viewer only logged an error of "The previous system shutdown @ was unexpected." I reinstalled Windows, loaded SP4 again and again, fixed the Windows Time Service errors, updated firmware, etc. Nothing cured this particularly frustrating problem until I worked with Dell server support to get new power supplies. It took a little persuausion on my part to get these power supplies, since the Dell tech kept leaning towards sending me a motherboard only. However, I was able to send him text directly from a Dell moderator discussing the power supply as a reasonable solution to random reboot issues. Here is the link:

After this, I was able to get some new power supplies, and since then, all my problems are solved.
