Windows 2000 Server Question

Greetings,

I just reinstalled Win 2000 server on a server with a fail HD and after the restore from tape I'm getting the following error:

" Lsass,exe

Directory Services could not start because of the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. Error Status: 0xc000000f. Please click OK to shutdown the system and reboot into the Directory Services Restore Mode, check the event log for more detailed information. "

I found MS KB 240362 which points to a Domain Controller error, However from what I can remember this server was not.. ( this is my only Windows server and has been running for 5 yrs and only time I mess with this was to do updates ). If you boot using the F8 - Directory Services Restore Mode - all application seems to work fine. I did try what the KB said to do, on reboot the server stops at trying to connection to the network.

I went thru the events logs that show errors but not sure what I'm looking for to solve this problem.

Any Ideas ???

THANKS !!

If you are sure this machine is not a domain controller or exchange server, you might try removing it from the domain and rejoining it.  There's a utility (netdom) which will allow you to reset the credentials if you can't remove it from the domain.

Make sure you have a local administrator account to login on the machine once you remove it from the domain.

Thanks,

Yes... this is the only Windows server I have ( I'm a Netware Shop ) , I'm pretty sure it was not a Domain Controller or in a Domain since this was the first on only 2000 server. It only ran one FoxPro and Web base app. Right now it's in the main workgroup for my network.

Should I still try running the utility  - netdom ?? and where can I find it.

thanks again

Personally I would do an "over the top repair" install. This will replace any missing files, but unless there is major issue it will not harm or make changes to your original setup. If you need a disk driver which is not originally on the Windows 2000 server disk, you will need to press F6 to add it. Done this at least 100 times, no issues.

Below is a link for a Win 2000 pro repair proceedure, but the server is the same.

You said the magic words, "workgroup" and "Novell".  Since you're already not in a domain, doing what I suggested won't help.

After the hard drive crash, you installed Windows and then recovered your backup.  I suspect your backup didn't really restore everything it was supposed to.  I'd try the repair (above) and see if that helps.

This is why you  test your backup procedures before you really need them.  I don't think you're in trouble but you'll need to try a couple of things to get back to where you were.

We'll help as much as we can.
