Windows 2000 reports 2 processors on PowerEdge 1600SC with only one processor
I have a PowerEdge 1600SC with only one 2.8 Ghz processor.
At this moment the system doesn't have any problems (it's twice as fast compared to my previous machine a PowerEdge 1400SC with one 1000 Mhz processor).
After installing Windows 2000 (without using OpenManage) and SQL Server 2000 I found that SQL Server detected 2 processors. In the system summary Windows 2000 also reports 2 processors: x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~2790 Mhz.
Can this cause any problems?
How can I fix this?

LOL! That's because the 1600SC supports hyperthreading. Xeon procs. The OS can see 1 physical proc as 2 logical procs giving you some extra performance.
This is a good thing :)

Hi,
These links from Intel and Microsoft explain the process and licensing issues.
http://developer.intel.com/technology/hyperthread/
http://developer.intel.com/eBusiness/products/server/processor/xeon/wp020901_sum.htm
http://developer.intel.com/technology/itj/2002/volume06issue01/art01_hyper/p01_abstract.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/evaluation/performance/reports/hyperthread.asp
If needed, you can disable Hyperthreading in the System BIOS of the server. Choose CPU information, and under there is a setting for Logical Processor. Disabling that option will turn off Hyperthreading, and your processor count will return to normal in the OS.

Physical and logical processors... I realy didn't kwow about their existence!
We have a SQL Server License for 1 processor. I already found out that Microsoft only counts physical processors for licensing purposes.

Those are zeons.
So why does my PowerEdge 700 with a Pentium 4 2.8Gh do the same thing in Windows server 2003?
I only have one physical processor, BIOS agrees with me.

The Pentium 4 processors in the PowerEdge 700 also support the technology known as Hyper-Threading.
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums!
