Windows 2003 Terminal Services

Using Terminal Services on my new Dell pre-loaded with Windows 2003 Server I am getting a background when I use RDP to connect (Windows/system32/dellwall.bmp)

How can I change this value?  It looks nice on my in-house systems, but when using RDP over the Internet, it is very slow (Image is big)

What version of the remote desktop client are you using?

Try getting the latest from Microsoft (microsoft.com do a search for remote desktop client)

In there under the options is an option to disable the remote desktop. that should take care of what you are lookign for.

I wish this was a background issue when in RDP.  This is BEFORE, during the signon!  Dell has done something to Terminal services program/dll's but I can't find where.

Thanks for the reply!

Are you talking about the default background of the device?

Are you talking about the background you see when you log into the machine (locally or over RDP)?

I guess I just dont understand the nature of the problem you are having.

If its an RDP program issue, try using a different version fo the RDP program.

I have the same problem..... The problem is that when connecting through Microsoft Remote Desktop Client (Yes, the latest version), on the initial login screen (where it asks for username, password and domain) the background is a 16-bit BMP that takes forever to load over a dialup connection.  Sure, I can turn the client settings video settings down on the workstation, but I would like to change the server to not display this BMP file at all (as in Win2000 version of Terminal services).  I'm sure there is a registry or group policy setting to disable this pre-logon BMP, but i can not find it.  Any help appreciated. Thanks, Justin

Yes,

Thank you!   This will not only fix my issue but allows me to put up a bitmap disclaimer when using Terminal services!

Best to you,

Simply run regedit browse to "KEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop". Double-click "Wallpaper" and remove the "\windows\system32\DELLWALL.BMP"
and bob's your uncle :)

have no idea about that, just a Brit saying .  That wallpaper is annoying though, especially when the server is used as a terminal server over a slow line... talk about watching Microsoft Paint dry...

Get rid of the Remote desktop Junk.

Run Citrix GOTOMYPC to remote to it.

Only 1 catch. You must use High speed internet to use gotomypc.

You dont need to open holes in your firewall or anything. It works great.

Is it just that machine that is slow or have to tried RDing to any other machines using the same line?
I would have thought the first port of call is monitoring the trafic on the router..RD works fine in most cases..I have noticed on my terminal server a lag when logging on at times but I thats due to my AD servers being overloaded..
really do need to sort that out :)
