upgrade PowerEdge 1900 to Windows Server 2012 r2

My PE1900 (see config here http://goo.gl/yZGqwb) is running Win 2003 server R2 64-bit, and I'm attempting to upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 r2 Standard, but the install disc won't load on boot up.

More details: running RAID 1+0 with four drives.  I disabled integrated RAID in setup and enabled ATA.  This allowed the Win2012 disc to finally load, but then the installation script required a storage driver, and I can't seem to find the correct one on Dell's support page.  All the drivers at the link above are executables, and the Win2012 install is looking for .inf/.sys & etc.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here:

1) Can I just leave the hardware RAID on for Win2012?  The system has a PERC 5i controller.  If so, how can I get the installation to run?

2) Is there a better way to go about this?  I can turn off integrated RAID and use the software redundancy in Win2012, but I need to find the correct storage driver files.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Franklinian,

You should be able to have the Integrated Raid Enabled as well as the IDE CD-ROM controller, which is responsible for the optical, to run at the same time. I checked to verify that you have a DVD drive as well as that is the only format for the 2012 install media. Now in regards to the driver, the media itself should have the Perc 5/i driver in it already. Which is why there isn't a listed one for the 1900 in support.dell.com.

What is the process you are doing for the install, are you using in Dell disks to assist?

Let me know.

We purchased an off-the-shelf copy of Win2012r2, so I guess we do not have any Dell disks.  Please advise as to how I can obtain what we need.

Thanks.

The disk I was referring to was for assisting in the install, but with the 2012 media it isn't required to use. I was just clarifying the process you are doing to install the OS.

Here is my exact process:

1. Insert Win2012serverR2 disc in drive.

2. Initiate bootup options at server start and designate DVD-ROM as first boot media.

3. The server begins to read data from the drive, but after a few seconds the Windows Server 2003 logo appears and it finishes booting the current OS from the HDD.

Storage configuration: 4 HDDs in RAID 1+0

If anyone suggest other details I should check, I would be most grateful.

Franklinian,

2 things to confirm. Have you moved the DVD up ahead of the HDD's in boot order? Also, are you seeing a prompt on screen to "Hit any key to boot from CD/DVD", when the disk is running? If it displays this and nothing is hit then it will go on in the boot order, to the existing OS.
