R710 - Connect & Configure SATA Drives/Cable Problem/Perc H700/Raid Config
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I recently bought a used PowedEdge R710, which I need for my master thesis in Computer Science. I will attach its Specs at the bottom. Everything works perfectly, the newest VMware vSphere Hypervisor is installed and I can access the machine via the WebGUI.
The problem: Initially I installed three Samsung 860 Evo SSDs but they would just not show up in the Hypervisor. I realized, that the front SAS Board was not connected to the Motherboard (see loose cable at the bottom of the picture) at all. And for the love of God I couldn't figure out where to connect the Mini-SAS (hope that's the right name for it?!) end of the cable to the motherboard.
Server Overview
My solution: I bought a Perc H700 Raid Controller, which just arrived (see card at the right top corner of the picture). Stupid me didn't take a look at the connector of the raid controller and it looks like Mini-SAS will definitely not fit in there. So now I stumbled upon a different and, from the looks of it, fitting SAS backplane cable (https://www.disctech.com/PERC-H700i-to-R710-SAS-Backplane-Cable) that would at least fit into my raid card.
My question: Will I be able to configure my consumer SSDs and use the H700 with the above cable? Is it even neccesary?! I feel like I'm missing something. I don't know how the previous owner used this server and how he was able to connect the drives in the front with the motherboard... Heck, I don't even need these SSDs in raid. JBOD would be fine. I simply want to be able to use the three drives with a few VMs and that's it. What steps would I need to take/what parts do I still need to buy/what configuration is necessary, so that I can use this R710 server?
I am terribly sorry, if my question might come across stupid. I'm a complete novice when it comes to full fledged servers though. Until now I've only worked with and owned a couple of NAS systems and build many PCs. YouTube Videos and posts on multiple forums didn't help unfortunately, so now I'm at my wit's end. I stopped at every boot option menu but a way to configure the drives was nowhere to be found.
So if there is anybody knowledgable and patient enough on this forum, to point out my faults and/or guide me through the correct way of setting up my server, be it with or without a raid card, then I would be eternally grateful.

sorry, dass ich erst jetzt antworte.
Ja, es ist richtig, viele gehen zum H700, eben weil er die Batterie hat und einen großzügigen Cache bietet.
Reinstecken, anschließen fertig :D - nagut, du solltest die Platten dann noch im Controller Menü checken und in einen RAID Verbund aufnehmen.
Der H700 unterstützt keine "non-RAID" configs, also muss mindestens ein RAID 0 auf einer Platte bestehen, damit diese dann auch ordnungsgemäß ans OS durchgereicht werden.
DIe unterschiedlichen Längen ergeben sich aus den Anschlüssen an der Backplane. Bei deiner ist glaube nur ein miniSAS Port dran, gibt noch die große, die hat 2 solche Ports, einer ist dann links und der andere rechts an der Backplane. Darum dann auch die unterschiedlichen Längen.
Bei einem Port, reicht auch ein Kabel, ja :robotwink:

From the picture, I suggest that this system was shipped with a SAS6/iR Controller. Do you still have this card?
SAS6/iR
The actual jack is the internal wide port, you need the internal mini-SAS wide ports cable to connect the backplane with the H700.
What you'll need to connect the H700 with the backplane (should be the 3.5" backplane, right?) are these cables:
N170M - H700 PERC SAS 0 Cable Assembly for 3.5" chassis (Controller 0 to Backplane A)
P110M - H700 PERC SAS 1 Cable Assembly for 3.5" chassis (Controller 0 to Backplane A)
The reason why disks are not seen in the hypervisor is mostly dedicated to the type of RAID for the disk. There is no HBA solution for the H700 so you'll need to create at least one RAID 0 over the single drives.
So if you have 4 disks you'll have to create 4 RAID 0 with every single drive in order to make it usable for the hypervisor.

Hallo Stefan,
erst einmal vielen Dank für deine Antwort! Und entschuldige, dass ich meinen Beitrag auf Englisch verfasst habe. Ich habe mich nur nach dem Großteil der Beiträge in diesem Forum gerichtet und die Meisten davon schienen auf Englisch verfasst worden zu sein.
Der von dir mit Bild angegebene SAS6/iR Controller war leider nicht Teil des Lieferumfangs. Das System kam komplett ohne (Raid-)Karte. Und du liegst vollkommen richtig mit deiner Vermutung, dass es sich um die 3,5" Backplane handelt.
Wenn ich deine Antwort richtig deute, wäre ursprünglich der SAS6/iR Controller für diesen Server gedacht gewesen. Da ich für den H700 Controller ja offensichtlich auch noch eines der beiden von dir genannten Kabel kaufen müsste (oder bräuchte ich sogar beide?), erscheint es mir sinnvoller, einfach die korrekte Karte für das bereits vorhandene Wide Port Kabel zu kaufen. Ich wäre wirklich sehr dankbar für irgendeine definitive Aussage eines Experten wie dir, so dass ich nicht noch weitere Fehlkäufe tätige und am Ende fünf verschiedene Raid Controller hier liegen habe. Dafür fehlt mir als Studi leider auch das Geld. Haha. Wenn du oder irgendjemand anderes sagt: Til, kauf dir den SAS6/iR Controller, dann hast du keine Probleme. Oder: Nimm das N170M Kabel und gut ist. Dann wäre ich mehr als glücklich.

Eine Erweiterung meinerseits nach weiterer Recherche:
1. Frage: Der H700 scheint dem 6/iR allein von den unterstützten RAID Levels ja schon überlegen zu sein. Batterie und andere Punkte mal außen vor gelassen. Im Internet sprechen viele von einem "Upgrade", wenn sie z.B. ursprünglich verbaute und kaputt gegangene SAS 6/iR Controller gegen einen H700 austauschen. Theoretisch dürfte der H700 also die bessere Wahl sein, oder liege ich da falsch? Bekomme ich den H700, auch als Laie, ohne Probleme in meinem R710 ans Laufen? Oder kommen da aufwändige Konfigurationsschritte/Systemanpassungen auf mich zu und ich sollte der Einfachheit halber zum SAS 6/iR Adapter greifen? Die Karte ist ja schon gekauft. Wenn mich jetzt tatsächlich nur noch der Kauf eines neuen Kabels von der Verwendung meines H700 trennt und der H700 zu meinem R710 kompatibel ist, würde ich natürlich gerne mit der "besseren" der beiden Karten arbeiten.
2. Frage - zum Anschluss des H700: Der einzige Unterschied beider genannten Kabel scheint lediglich die Länge zu sein - 55cm P110M gegenüber 70cm N170M. Ist das korrekt? Ich habe auch nur einen Anschluss an der Backplane. Insofern dürfte eines der beiden Kabel für meine Zwecke reichen, sollte ich den H700 nehmen, oder?

ich bekam keine Mail, dass eine Antwort auf meinen Thread eingegangen ist, deswegen antworte auch ich verspätet. Ich habe auch nicht mehr regelmäßig reingeschaut, da sich längere Zeit nichts mehr tat. Tut mir leid. Du brauchst dich aber mit Sicherheit nicht entschuldigen! Wie konsequent und größtenteils einsam du hier auf alle Beiträge antwortest, ist allein schon eine große Leistung. Wirklich vielen Dank für deine hilfreichen Antworten, von denen ich die letzte als Lösung akzeptiert habe.
