You should not use the Virtual IP address in connecting to the GUI --- you should connect to the --management_ip and the GUI will automatically failover to the secondary MDM if it needs to.
Or better yet, move to version 3.5 and use the new HTML5 presentation server instead, it will automatically take care of this for you.

It could be two issues.
1. the MDM process in your slave node is not running.
2. you didn't specify the MDM Management IP for the slave node.
