Not able to append to Media

Hello all,

I have a Power Edge 2600 with a Power Vault DLT VS Tape Drive. Running Windows 2000 SP4.

I use NT Backup and perform a full backup once a week and incremental the rest of the week.  This has worked fine up until a few days ago.  I have started to receive the following error: Unable to append to the requested media.

I have ejected the tape and re inserted it, stopped started the removable storage service, and switched tapes.Has anyone else experienced this?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joel

Is it possible that the media you are trying to append to is full?

Richard,

I don't think so.

I checked everything that I have selected to back up and its only about 23 GB.  The tapes are supposed to hold 40-80 GB.

I assume that when I do a full backup(Normal) this should overwrite everything on the tape.

How else would I check?

Thanks,

When running the backups, NT backup has two settings.  (overwrite existing media, or append.).  Depending on what you have it set for make the difference.    If you keep running backups (incremental or full), and all of a sudden the backup utility says can't append, than it appears that your settings are set to append and not overwrite.  Double check the setting that says "If the media already contains backups....etc".  It is listed in the "Backup Job Information " screen inside of the NT backup utility.

Richard,

Thanks for all your help!

I have 4 tapes that I cycle through every 4 weeks.  At the beginning of the week I set it to a normal back up and tell it to overwrite anything on the tape (so I thought).  For all the incremental backups I always select append.  I had assumed that when the normal or full backup was done with the overwrite option it would erase the whole tape and begin the new backup.

I went in to computer management/removable storage/ and deleted the tape from my media pool.  I then went to Free/ DLT and prepared the tape.  This should have erased everything on the tape.  The only reasons that normal or full backups worked were because I was doing exactly what you said I would select overwrite media.

If what I did works for the incremental backups this should tell me that my tape was full and I probably need to do this every week before my backup in order to continue appending my incremental backups to my full backups.  If it doesn’t I know that I can always just set everything to overwrite the media.

Thanks again,

Joel
