P/Edge2600-PV110T SDLT320 no compression

Help!! PV110T SDLT320 on w200server with Veritas Backup Exec V9,1 rev 4691, using HP Super DLT 1 C7980A 220-320Gb cartridge.
Cannot get any compression reported in backups - tape capacity reports as 149Gb (10 cartridges in use - all the same). Job log (150.3Gb! written OK with no warnings) shows no info re compression ratio, media info in Backup Exec shows ratio 1:1. Got 206Gb data to back up, surely this should go on (compressed) 320gb tape. If I send all data as one job it reports insufficient space on media.
Got job set to use 'hardware compression, if not use s/w compression', and the job also enables compression.
I don't expect anything near the mythical 2:1 as I know some data is already compressed. Oh, and the drive front panel lights seem to indicate cart is 320Gb formatted.
Am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any help offered.......Bob

Sounds like a true 1:1 as verified by the tape full at around 150GB.

Drive properties has the Enable compression checked in the Configuration tab?

What type of files are you backing up?

Quick test: Grab several of your files and determine the size of all the files combined. Now take those files and run them through a compression utility (like WinZip). Check the size of the compressed file. Is it the same size as the combined uncompressed files? If yes then your files may not be able to be compressed anymore. If no then sounds like your H/W is not compressing. May need to contact Tech support for a solution.

You may also want to try S/W compression on and H/W off and see if you recieve the same 1:1 compression.

Good Luck.
