Archive Python 04106-xxx - Can I Use DDS-4 Tapes
The DDS-3's capacity of 24G has been surpassed by our server. Can I use DDS-4 tapes or are there any other tapes which I can use that will hold more info.
Please advise. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Unfortunately, there is no way to increase the capacity of the DDS-3 drive beyond 24Gb.

Hi Mark,
why doesn't my Python (Seagate STD224000N) accept older DDS1-Tapes neither? I think it shouldt. Firmware is 743B-0.
Thanks Rudolf

Hi Rudolf,
The documentation for the Seagate STD224000N
indicates it supports these tapes:
60-m (DDS-DC) MP tape
90-m (DDS-DC) MP tape
120-m (DDS-2) MP+ tape
125-m (DDS-3) MP++ tape
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums!

Hi Mark.
Thanks for the quick replay. I tell you it doesn't. Maybe I have to reduce the data transfer rate?

Hi,
I do not believe changing the data transfer rate will help (but it wont hurt). When you say the DDS-1 tapes don't work, do you mean they will not read existing data or will not write to the tapes?
It is not unusual for tape drives to have problems reading data from used tapes (especially these older drives), when having been written by a different drive or backup software.
Thanks

Hi,
Those messages are indicative of a defective tape or drive, not an incompatibility. Usually if the tape is incompatible, the drive will simply immediately eject the tape.

Hi Mark.
During backup I get a message like this:
Tape Drive Error
Tape device "Seagate 1" reported an error on a request to write a file mark to tape.
Error responded: Bad data.
The last firmware I upgraded is 7600-0.
In Germany it's 90 minutes to midnight, 12/31/2003: All the best for 2004!

Hi Mark.
First question in 2004 (in Germany).
When there is a hardware problem with my STD224000N, why does it run backups properly with DDS3-tapes (it just did) and why does a HP35480A work with the same DDS1-tapes (not only one), the STD224000N doesn't accept, absolutly properly?
Have a successfull 2004.

Hurraaaahhhhh!
It seems to work after having installed a new AIC-78xx (SP3) driver from the Adaptec web site; it doesn't with the original NT4.0 SP6a driver.
Don't ask me why.

Hi Rudolf,
That is a good question. Unfortunately, I do not have an answer, other than just an educated guess. Sometimes "compatible" hardware just does not work as expected. I have seen this many many times. This could be a result of different manufacturing techniques, wear patterns or .... ?
I am sorry I could not have a more definate answer. Have a great New Year !!!
