Hello mrslyfox,

Here is the link to the support matrix. http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/powervault_md3400_md3420_md3460_md3800if_md3820if_md3860if_supportmatrix_en-us.pdf

If you look on page 36 it states the following:

Supported SAS host bus adapters

Note: The LSI 9300-8e HBA is compatible only on the Dell PowerEdge 11th, 12th, and 13th generation servers that have a PCI Express (PCIe) x8 slot.

Note: The Dell 12 Gbps SAS HBA is compatible only on the Dell PowerEdge 13th and 14th generation servers that have a PCI Express (PCIe) x8 slot.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello @DELL-Sam L

Can I use Dell SAS HBA 6Gbps (http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/Documents/dell-6gbps-sas-ita-spec-sheet.pdf) with R740 to connect MD3200 ?

In other words what HBA adapter do I need to connect MD3200 to R740 ?

Hello mrslyfox,

No you can’t.  In your R740 you have to use a 12gbs SAS card as those are the only cards that are supported.  Now you can connect your MD3200 to a 12GB SAS card & get it seen by your R740 server.  You will need to get a 12gb to 6gb cable to connect your MD3200 to your R740.  Here are the part#’s for the 12gb to 6gb cable.

Dell Part#                            Length of Cable

5J89T                                     0.5 Meter

1502C                                    3 Meter

FDPNX                                  5 Meter

YJXMR                                  2 Meter

As a warning the storage array FW needs to be updated to supported levels that allow the 12G SAS HBA (08.20.05.60 and later).  Also it an MD34xx & MD38xx are the support enclosures for a 14th generation server like your R740.  Dell has not fully tested an MD3200 with a 14th generation server.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello @DELL-Sam L

My official distributor suggested to use

405-AAES   SAS 12Gbps HBA External Controller,Low Profile, CusKit
470-ABDQ 12Gb HD-Mini SAS cable, 0.5m, Customer Kit

to get connection btw R740 and MD3420

could you please check part number compatibility ?

Hi

I wanted to confirm if the same applies to Dell HBA for R740 + MD1280?

Unfortunately we received:

 470-AAKK : 6Gb Mini-SAS to Mini-SAS Cable , 2M, Qty 2

 406-BBDO : LSI 9207-8e PCIe3 6Gb SAS HBA (Drop in the Box)

Assuming the Dell 12G SAS Dual Port HBA Host Bus Adapter works with R740 + MD1280 would the cable we have work?

Regards

Hi SaM-L, We just recently bought a R740 to be added to our existing infra, we also have the MD3200 which I recently upgrade the RAID controller firmware to 8.20.24.60 to prepare it for the new server. Also bought a SAS HBA Cable (YJXMR, 2 Meter) because of the port compatibility with R740. However, when I connected the cables to the SAS IN Port 2 of the MD3200 there are no lights on the R740 sas ports, and when I check the Raid Controller properties the interface is still down. I lost here, could you please advise possible troubleshooting steps or perhaps you already know the issue? Thank you, Carlo

Hello Carlo,

Which SAS HBA do you have in your R740 that you are using to connect to your MD3200? If you are using a 12GB SAS HBA then the cable you need is Dell part#1502C which is 12gb on one end and 6GB connector on the other.  Once you have that cable then you should have activity lights so you can configure host access in MDSM.   Here is the link to the Administrator guide & if you look on page 55 it explains how to configure host access. https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/md32xx_md36xx_administrator%20guide_en%20us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Was anyone able to get your MD3200 to talk to your Dell R740?

I've just finished upgrading the MD3200 to the latest firmware and so far no dice.

What I do have is:

I have a new Dell R740, Slot 1, 12GB SAS Adapter card plugged into RAID 1 on the MD3200 with two cables ( I don't think they were the Dell 6GBps to Dell 12GBps cables specified, but some from CDW that had the proper ends on them).

I've manually gotten the host identifiers from the Dell R740 and tried manually configuring it, but no dice.  Is there something I'm missing in order to get these things talking to one another?  Is it as trivial as ordering a Dell Branded cable as specified (5J89T / 0.5 Meter)?

I've confirmed the latest drivers on the Dell, but still no dice.....any help would be SO greatly appreciated.
