Dell MD1420 in JBOD configuration

I have some Dell MD1420's that I use as JBODs for Microsoft storage spaces.

Currently I have 3 MD1420's connected to two Server 2012 R2 nodes. I have SOFS running with an enclosure aware storage pool / virtual disk.

When I run the command get-pysicaldisk it returns not just the slot but also the JBOD that the disk is in and the configuration works great.

At the weekend I tried to setup the exact same configuration using Server 2016. However I have noticed that when running the command get-physicaldisk it will not return what JBOD the disk is in, only the slot.

This is stopping me using newer versions of windows server.

Is there anything that I can do to get around this issue? I cannot setup enclosure awareness for fail over without the JBODs being listed against the disk.

Any help with this is appreciated!

Hello daniejam,

Is the server that your MD1420 is connected to is it a Dell server? If it is what model is of server do you have?  Also, which HBA are you using in your server to connect your MD1420?  Which drivers are you using for your HBA as well as the firmware of your HBA?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam We use dell r730s as nodes with Kai 3008 fury 12g hbas We use dell open manage to confirm all drivers and firmware are up to date. The same hardware works fine with 2012 R2 but doesn’t work on 2016/9

Sorry i was on my phone and it changed the spelling. It is an LSI SAS 3008 12G HBA. I believe its Dell part number is 156NC These do work without issue in 2012 R2, however if you think that could be the issue i could look to purchase one to see if it resolved the issue.

Hello daniejam,

I am not sure about your HBA’s as I have personally not heard of Kai 3008 fury 12g.  If you can look in open manage does it see the drives and the enclosures?  If you can see the drives and the enclosures in open mange then your issue is going to be with windows 2016 or the controllers drivers.  The MD1420 is supported by windows 2016 along with the controllers that are shown in the support matrix.  https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/md1400_md1420_supportmartix_en_us.pdf

Hello daniejam,

Looking at that card it is supported in an R730.  I would check & make sure that your firmware on the controller is running the latest version. Here is the link to the latest version just in case you need it. https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=W2X85&osCode=W12R2&productCode=poweredge-r730

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I have applied the firmware and it still is not picking up what chassis the disk is in, only the slot.

Hello daniejam,

I am thinking this is an issue with windows 2016.  If you can use open manage and open manage can see your MD1420 enclosures and drives that information should be passed from the controller to windows.  If you have an active support on your MD1420’s then I would call into support & open a case so we can look into this deeper.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam, the device is now under the supported list for server 2016. So I am unsure what other issues it can be :(
