That card is a raid card & you don’t want to put a tape library on a raid card as you will have problems getting your backups to complete. I would suggest that you find an HBA that is a non-raid SAS HBA & most of those will work in your R720 server.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello simpleguy3k,
So that card is a combo card in that if you have hard drives connected to it you can use it as a raid card, or if no drives are direct connected to the card then it can be used as a SAS passthrough card. Also I checked the Compatibility guide & it does support a couple of different tape units as well. http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/Host%20Bus%20Adapters/Host%20Bus%20Adapters%20Common%20Files/LSI_6Gb_SAS_SATA_HBA_Compatibility_List.pdf
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
