How to solve sense key error on HDD
Hi All,
I have a PE2650 server and connected to PV220s storage with 16x73GB HDDs, I found the Array manager continuouly prompt the message like the following:
PERC 3/DC Controller 0, Array Disk 0:5 Sense Key = 3, Sense Code = 11, Sense Qualifier = 2. If this disk is part of a redundant virtual disk, select the 'Offline' option and then replace the disk. Then configure a hot spare and it will start the rebuild automatically. If this disk is a hot spare, select the 'Prepare to Remove' option and then replace the disk. If this disk is part of a non-redundant disk, you should back-up your data immediately. If the disk fails, you will not be able to recover the data.
The storage replace HDDs many times on different slots when the event shown sense keys error but the above code still shown on different HDD repeat and repeat. We update 3/DC controller driver, firmwares and clear configuration but still shown the same event.
Is there any suggestions and solutions to solve?
Thanks & Regards,
Dic Hun

This may be difficult to isolate without the use of a SCSI analyzer to see what is triggering the message. It is hard to say if this is being caused by the array manager sending bogus data, or if the drive is properly responding with this sense data due to a serious problem.
The sense code you mention 03/11/02 means:
03: MEDIUM ERROR 11/02: Error too long to correct. (you can find these in the SCSI protocol specification)
If you are using Windows, check the system event viewer to see if you are getting errors that relate to the error above. If using Linux, run a dmesg command and you may alse see the same sense data messages. If you do see the same sense data messages in the dmesg or system event viewer, turn off the array manager services, and see if the system event viewer or dmesg still shows the messages. Since you have already replaced several drives, this is most likely not a fault in the drive. Did this problem just start, or did it occur all the time? Do all your drives have the proper firmware?
Again, hard to solve without the use of a scsi analyser.

Hi Richard,
Thanks a lot your message.
Check there is no system event viewer related to the error above and found the log shown during the server reboot and boot up. And where can I download a program scsi analyser from Dell to solve the issue and is the issue related to hardware or software?
Thanks & Regards,

If your going to receive a sense error - Sense error 3 Sense Code 11 is the one to get.
This error is reporting you have some bad block areas on some of your disks.
The easiest way to fix this is to perform a consistency check on the logical disk.
Both Server Administrator and Array Manager can perform this operation while the server is online.,
Server Administrator- Virtual Disk Tasks
Maintain Integrity of Redundant Virtual Disks
If you have created a redundant virtual disk, the Check Consistency task verifies the accuracy of the redundant (parity) information. This task only applies to redundant virtual disks. When necessary, the Check Consistency task rebuilds the redundant data.
To launch the Check Consistency task:
