MD1000 - adding disks to array
Hi hoping for some help.
PowerEdge 850 + Perc5/e
I have an MD1000 in splitt configuration. On the second half we have 4x 500GB disks in RAID-10 for approx 1GB. I need to add disks to increase the existing array to approx 1.5GB,
I have 2x500GB disk which have already added to the MD1000. The problem I have is I cant find a way to add these disks to the existing array (I need to keep the current data intact.
I've had some previous advice:
I would suggest the following steps:
Preparation stage:
- make a backup of your data (shouldn't need to recover anything, but when making changes to your setup this is even more important than normal)
- update all drivers, firmwares and the bios on the server, perc and MD1000
- update OpenManage Server Administrator to the latest version for your server (probably 5.5.x)
- make another backup (now that everything has been updated
Actual process:
- insert the 2 extra drives
- go into the Server Administrator
- go to storage
- select the PERC5E and verify the 2 new physical drives are recognized
- go to the virtual drives
- on the dropdown behind the virtual drive in question select the reconfigure option
- select to add the 2 new drives and make sure to stay with raid 10
- let this reconfigure (will take several hours to a day or more)
- once finished, follow this MS KB article to extend the partition.
The problem is I dont see the reconfigure option. For the new disks, I can only create RAID-0 or RAID-1. Ive updated firmware, drivers etc

"Reconfigure" is not supported on spanned RAID volumes (RAID 10, RAID 50 & RAID 60), these arrays cannot be expanded.
If the "Preparation stage" is exeucted and the usage of the system allows it; you can delete the current RAID volume, create a new one using the extra disks and copy the data back.
