You can change the MD1000 to split mode using the slider on the front of the enclosure. If you split it, the enclosures seperates slot 0 to 6 and then 7 to 14. Each controller on the back gets that side of the enclosure.

This change (to split mode) does require you to power off the enclosure and then power it up again for the change to take effect. So you will need to shut down the 2950 before this change, but barring issues, you shouldn't lose any data (assuming your current disks are split across the 2 halves of the enclosure.

I did not understand you remark "assuming your current disks are split across the 2 halves of the enclosure". They are not...

So, sorry for double-checking, but you understand I would like confirmation.

I have 5 disks (slot 10 to 14) currently used by an existing server.

So, if I understand correctly, I can:

  • Shutdown the MD1000 and the server.
  • Switch from unified to split mode and reboot all.
  • Have my existing server still accessing the existing data on the disks in slots 10 to 14.

Will the existing RAID 5 array in slots 10 to 14 still have the same config and contain the same data (files & folders) as before the switch to split mode?

I think what Dev Mgr meant was to ensure that you did not have any disk groups that spanned across both sides of the array. Looks like that is not a problem for you.

You might have to recable the SAS cables to ensure that the correct controller is connected to your server.

Other than that, I believe that you should be good in following the procedure you mentioned. All the RAID logic is on the PERC card, so your disk data should remain unaffected.

Yeah, I think I missed a "not" in there.

As long as your disks are NOT split between the halves of the enclosure, you can just shut down the 2950, power off the MD1000, change the switch, power up the MD1000 again, make sure the 2950 is connected to the correct side of the MD1000 (the one that has the drives it needs) and power up the 2950. After this you can connect a different server to the other half of the MD1000.

Thanks mrokkam & Dev Mgr for the confirmation.
