MD1220 Split Mode not working

I'm not at all familiar with Dell server products. We recently purchased 2 r710s to use in split mode with a MD1220.

Each host runs its own H810.

Cabling: Server 1: From port 0 on the H810 to the EMM1 (Should see bays 0-11) Server 2: From port 0 on the H810 to the EMM0 (Should see bays 12-23)

I cannot see any drives in bays 0-11. I can see drives 12-23 though.

I have switched both H810s and can see drives 12-23 after the switch, but not drives 0-11.

The split mode switch is down and the top LED on the MD1220 is blue. I rebooted the MD1220 after switching it from unified to split mode. I've rebooted the servers several times as well.

This is also the second MD1220 that we have tested. Both units are doing the exact same thing. Only 1 side of the MD1220 works, period.

Can someone tell me what is happening here?

Hello z900,

When you power on your MD1220 are, you letting it bootup & run for about 3 minutes before you power on your hosts?  Also, you stated that the enclosure status light is blue, is that solid blue or blinking blue?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam and thank you very much for your assistance.

When I power the MD1220 on, I am only waiting about 10 seconds before I power on the 2 r710s. I can try waiting 3 minutes as you suggested and see what that gets me.

The blue light on the front of the MD1220 is a solid blue light. I've never seen it flash blue before, only amber, and that was because I didn't have the second PSU plugged in. Once I plugged that in, I get the solid blue light.

I just learned a few minutes ago that the H810 I'm using is NOT supported on the r710. Could this be an issue?

Is it a requirement to have all of the bays full of drives before it will work? For testing purposes, I have 1 drive in bay 0 and 1 drive in bay 12. Is this okay?

Is there a way to load the EMM firmware without having to first load a windows OS?

Hello z900,

You need to wait 3 minutes before powering on your host to give your MD1220 a chance to boot.  You need to have a minimum of slots 0-3 with drives otherwise the system will not show up correctly on your controller.  For your R710 server you should be using an H800 card.  The H810 is the next version of the H800, & was not tested with the R710 server.  Your H810 should work as it is seeing slots 12-23.  You will need to do EMM firmware using either windows or Linux OS, as there is not a way to push it directly to your EMM’s.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,

I updated the firmware on the EMMs as you suggested. After the firmware upgrade was completed, I rebooted the MD1220 then waited 3-4 minutes before powering on either of the host machines. After the 3 minute wait, I booted both servers and see the same issue. I cannot see any of the drives in bays 0-11. Because the H810 is not supported on the r710, I ordered 2 PERC H800s today and will test with these when they arrive in the next 3 days.

I took some images and video for you and posted them. Hopefully this will be helpful to anyone wanting to help. Please see the following link:

Hello z900,

It should work once you get your PERC H800 controllers.  If you are still not able to see any of the drives in slots 0-11 when connected to PERC H800 & you have slots 0-3 with Dell HDD drives, then we will need to review a controller log so that we can see what your controller is seeing.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,

I received the (2) replacement PERC H800 cards and 2 brand new W390D cables today and just came back from trying them out. I'm sorry to report that I am getting exactly the same behavior out of them as I did with the (2) PERC H810 cards.

I've appended another video of the operation between the r710s and the MD1220.

Can you tell me where I can find this controller log?

Thanks again for all of your help on this issue, Sam.

EDIT: I found a document on how to download the controller log, so I did that. Please use the link above to see the log.

Hello z900,

I tried to view your controller log but I am getting a page not found error.  I will send you a private message with my email address so that you can email the log directly.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sam, I posted this message on a different thread, but I am having the exact same problem.

I have an MD1200 in split mode with 2 R710 servers with H800 controllers.  I have updated the R710 BIOS, EMM firmware, H800 firmware to the latest revs.

EMM0 can see the last 6 drives.

EMM1 cannot see anything.  OpenManage and R800 BIOS says no PD detected.

I switched the MD1200 to unified mode and all 12 drives appear just fine.

What am I missing?

Hello FrankSink,

If you swap your EMM in your MD1200 do you get the same result or does it change? Also, have you tried to reseat the cables to see if there is any change?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello FrankSink,

Can I get you to pull a controller log from your working server that is connected to your MD1200?  Here is a link that shows how to get the log if needed. https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln249450/how-to-export-the-tty-perc-controller-log-via-openmanage-server-administrator-omsa-?lang=en

Have you tried to use the second port on your PERC card to see if your virtual disk will show?  Also, when you swapped the cables did you power down your MD1200 or no?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sam,

I have the log.  I don't see a way to attach a file here.

How would you like me to get you the file?

Regards, Frank
