ML6000 Network Based Backup

Can the ML6000 backup data across the network directly to the tape drive? I'm using EMC NetWorker, and want to backup data that is on a mapped drive to the server node. I'm wondering if it will push the data right to the tape drive, or bring it all local to the server first then transfer it via fibre.

The ML6000 will need to interact with a server to create or restore a backup. Typically this could be done via a single server using Snapview of the data luns from multiple servers to offload the backup from the main data servers to a backup server.

Ok, wasn't sure about how it worked. Can you give me more information on what Snapview is. I'm not sure about how to go about this. I tried to backup from the mapped drive in NetWorker, but it won't show it to me as an option, so I'm assuming the data must have to be pushed to the backup server by another process, such as a scripted robocopy job?

Snapview is a layered application install on your CX array. It is a purchased add on to the Navisphere software. Using snapview on the array, the array creates a point in time copy of your data lun, and presents that copy to your back up host. Your backup host can then view the data on that lun as if it had physical access to the device. Your backup software can then backup that lun as if it were a local SCSI disk.

Thanks for the great info. So it can take snapshots of LUNs the server doesn't have rights to, and present them to it? Sounds nice. I'll have to look into it once we're fully SAN migrated. Right now we're half SAN half SCSI array, which is why I was hoping I could feed some data through the tape drive's Ethernet port, rather than bringing it through the backup server. We're only a couple of months from being fully migrated to the SAN anyhow.
