I too am having this problem using Netware 6 and Arcserve 9 on a 1600SC.  Unable to enable compression for the backup jobs.  I'm about to upgrade firmware/software via the recently arrived Snap CD.  Will advise.

Haven't done the upgrades yet but for Netware at least, I toggled the drive compression off then back on via the OS and compression now seems to be enabled.

Hi guys, did you manage to find a fix for this NO compression thing, as I am having similar probs. Using Arcserve for windows version 9 and the powervault p100t dds4 and for some reason the back ups started failing saying unable to find media, but this was after backing up like 19.8 gb then put a blank tape in, click ok and its off again. But when looking at setup it all says that compression is on.

Can I manually turn the tape drive compression off and use the software compression through Arcserve?? or is using hardware compression better??? Am pretty new to this software and hardware configuration so a bit green around the gills :)

Thanks

From CAI tech support:

"Arcserve does not do any kind of compression.  Hardware compression has to be enabled on the tapedrive physically."

Should be applicable to both Windows and Netware version I believe.

That is what I thought at first, but using the tape drives own compression has been giving me trouble for the last week or so, so last night i erased the full tape to get it back to blank, turned off the device compression, then modified the backup job to compress files through the arcserve software in the options of the backup,  and this morning, when I came to work, it had backed up and compressed it properly and has saved onto one tape..!!!!!

So I am happy now, I might try and fiddle about and switch the device compression on again and see what happens, but it actually worked last night which is a lot of worry off my mind :) but that was through the compression through the Arcserve software itself..!!

Hi

I'm having exactly the same issue, suddenly 40gb backups only fitting on 20gb (just under) after over 2 years of happy backups.

Is there a definative fix for this? I'm going to try the previous posts fix (change DIP to no compression and try a backup to see if it goes the full 40gb again)

Your feedback and assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Many thanks!

Hmmm... oddly I've just noticed this -

I put a tape in (20gb/40gb) that was written last week and it shows as 'unrecognised' ... I'm concerned that my recent backups now cannot be read for some mad reason!

I will test this when I am onsite (as I'm working remotely at the mo) with a selection of tapes to see what's going on, and to attempt to switch the compression on/off/on etc....

All help appreciated before I pull all my hair out!!

Cheers
