The message is indicating that a host application has locked the device and will not allow manual media motion from the front panel. You will need to "unlock" the device from within the application.

If this is Backup Exec, simply right click the device from the device pane and select unlock.

We have been having this problem for over a year.  It is so unproductive to have to do the unlock all the time.  We more often just reboot the 124T and the server then our backups happen for a day or two.  It is really frustrating and we don't have time to troubleshoot.  We worked with Dell early on when we got the 124T and they had us use the generic driver on the server and update the firmware of the tapedrive.  That didn't solve anything.

We haven't spent very much time working with Veritas but that is the next step when we get a moment.

Are you on the latest firmware?   which backup program are you using?

I have this problem occassionally but only seems to happen after I reboot the server.  I am using backup exec 11d's most recent version and hotfixes.  I am also on a fairly recent version of the autoloader firmware.

I'm having this problem too.  When I try to "unlock" the array from Backup Exec, it tells me "Access is Denied".  Is there another workaround for this issue?  I can't even eject a magazine from the front panel to load tapes, etc.

I am on BENW 10d, SP3, but plan to go to version 12 with the latest hotfixes soon.  Any suggestions till then?
