PowerVault 132T Library Tape Alert errors in BE9.1

Hi

I'm relatively new to robotic libraries - we have recently purchased a PowerVault 132T with two LTO-2 drives connected to a Dell PowerEdge 2650 running the latest version of Backup Exec 9.1

The problem I have is with loading tapes into the library, and the subsequent stack of Tape Alert error messages that get generated by Backup Exec.

For example, to change tapes in the morning, out operators

1) Open the tape library door, and remove the tape magazine

2) Remove all tapes from the previous night and insert two new tapes

3) Reinsert magaine and close all library door - the library then does an inventory of sorts once this is done

Now, when the nightly tape backup runs, there are about 12 separate tape alert messages generated with the following contents

----- TapeAlert Events -----

Information - The library has been manually turned offline and is unavailable for use.
Robotic Library for Device: POWERVAULT 132T

Warning - Library security has been compromised.
Robotic Library for Device: POWERVAULT 132T

Critical - The library has detected a inconsistency in its inventory.
1. Redo the library inventory to correct inconsistency.
2. Restart the operation
Check the applications users manual or the hardware users manual for specific instructions on redoing the library inventory.

The backup still completes ok, albeit we recieve about 20 emails per job. Is there any way to correct this problem, or a way to load the tapes to avoid the Tape Alert errors? I have tried importing the media via the mail slot, but it still has the same effect.

Thanks

James

Try stopping the Backup Exec services (Tools/BackupExec services...). Once the services have stoppped do your media swap then restart the services. After the services restart the library should be current with the new inventory. You can verify this via the Devices pane in B/E.

The only other way is to export all the media via the I/E slot then import all your new media back via the I/E slot.

why not use the import export slot on the library and have the backup software do the move so it does not see the tapes as missing if it is only 2 tapes that you are changing ?

This won't make the ALL of the errors go away, but after you change the media (and after the PV132T has scanned the barcodes on all of the media), right click on the changer (or maybe on the slots) and select Scan. This will update BackupExec's slot inventory to match what the PV132T has. I am changing out 4 tapes once a week, and I usually use the Import/Export slot, but I used to take the tape cartridges out and when I did, there would be an error in BE about the library security being compromised. If I only pulled out one cartridge, I'd only see one error. If I pulled out both cartridges, I'd see two errors. These were the only errors I'd see and they didn't cause my jobs to fail or to generate extra e-mails. I'd just see an alert in BE something to the effect of "Job blahblah has generated one or more tape alerts. Please see the job for details."
