PowerVault ME4 SAS - vSphere 7.0 U2

Hello, anyone installed PowerVault ME4 SAS with vSphere 7.0 U2?

Yesterday I've upgrade a customer from vSphere 6.7 U3 but vSphere 7.0 U2 was unable to see the datastores, they where 0 byte

I had to revert back to vSphere 6.7 U3

PowerVault firmware is latest GT280R008-04

During installation I had this warning, never seen before: vmFileSystem: Slow refresh failed. Cannot open volume: vmfs/volumes/xxxx

https://serverfault.com/questions/1024054/installing-esxi-6-7-on-hp-gen9-warning-vmfilesystem-slow-refresh-failed-cannot

Thanks, Marco

Hello Marco.Novelli,

Looking at the support matrix for ME4 systems I am seeing that VMware vSphere 7.0 is showing as supported, but I am not seeing that VMware vSphere 7.0 U2 is not supported. Here is a link to the support matrix & if you look on page 23 it list out the supported OS. https://dell.to/3bJF3Fm

I cant help but we see unexpected behavior with SCv2020 SAS after going from 6.7u3 to 7.0u1(worst) and than 7.0u2a (better).

Maybe its related to https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/rn/vsphere-esxi-70u2a-release-notes.html and search for "2738401".

I think this is the real issue with vSphere 7.0 U2

Storage Issues

PR 2747220: After an ESXi host upgrade to ESXi 7.0 Update 2, VMFS volumes fail to mount on Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) storage
For storage devices that support T10 standard-based VAAI specifications, VMFS provides ATS locking, also called hardware assisted locking. However, when an ESXi host upgrades to ESXi 7.0 Update 2, VMFS volumes fail to mount on SAS storage, because VAAI support is disabled due to a plug-in change. Prior to ESXi 7.0 Update 2, the Native Multipathing Plug-In (NMP) claimed SAS devices, but starting with 7.0 Update 2, the default multipathing plug-in for SAS devices has changed to the High-Performance Plug-in (HPP). HPP marks all SAS targets as local by default and disables VAAI operations, similar to the way VAAI operations are disabled on local HDDs.

This issue is resolved in this release for SAS devices with Asymmetric Logical Unit Access (ALUA) support. However, before an update or upgrade to ESXi 7.0 Update 2a, for Active-Active and Active-Passive SAS storage controllers, you must follow the steps described in VMware knowledge base article 83249.

I have recently deployed a ME4 which is directly connected via SAS-12G to a VMware 7.0U2 ESXi host. I had no issues with the hosts seeing the volumes on the ME4, once the initiators and host setup was done on the ME4 and the VMware SAS HBA was rescanned.

VMware ESXi, 7.0.2, 17630552, has 6x 40T datastores presented from the ME4, formatted in VMFS6.

Take a look at this link from VMWare.
