It probably wouldn't be certified or supported by Dell, meaning that if you're having problems getting the tape drive to work in the OS on the server, Dell may tell you to get a supported SAS controller so that they can support/assist you.
Have you considered just getting a PV124T? I believe these are available in U320 SCSI version, which means you can use an Adaptec 39320/39160 as Dell sold these in the 2650 at the time.
We have the drive now in the SAS version and can't swap it over with the SCSI version (which I don't believe they do in LTO 4). Not so worried about whether it is supported or not, just whether it will work.
