Hello Addicus1111,

You will need to purchase a backup software to use with the RD1000.  The reason is that with the RD1000 even though it is a removable backup device but when using windows 2012 backup it see the RD1000 as an internal drive & not a removable drive.  When you connect your WD passport drive to the server it see that as a removable device that is why you can see it in 2012 backup.  That is the reason we recommend that you get a 3rd party software to use with the RD1000.  This was also an issue in 2008 as well as it would do the same thing as you can see the RD1000 & it is seen as an internal drive so you need a 3rd party backup software to use to interface with the RD1000.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sam,

Thanks for the info! I'm currently testing Veeam as my backup solution as most of my production servers are now Hyper-V but because the current version really doesn't support removable media and Symantec 2012 Backup Exec doesn't support Windows 2012 yet...I'm in a bit of a situation. Any recommendations?

Regards,

Addicus1111

Has this situation changed?  I purchased the RD1000 specifically as a backup system for our T420 server.  Shouldn't it work with Windows Server Backup?

Hello jflores476,

With windows server backup it is setup for a one time copy backup now.  If you want to have it so that it runs a backup everyday then you will either need to use Microsoft DPM or a 3rd party software.
