TL4000 Auto Cleaning
How many hours of use before the drive requires cleaning? We have around 1000 hours on one of the drives and the Cleaning tape (which is inserted into the Cleaning slot, and Auto Clean is enabled) has yet to even be loaded.

LTO drives do not have a set hour mark for cleaning. The cleaning will be triggered by the drive when the error threshold within the drive has been triggered.
When a tape cartridge is loaded into the drive a brush mechanism runs over the head prior to loading the tape this will in most cases keep the head clean.
If you operate your library in a clean enviornment at the recomended operating temperatures it may be possible to never need a cleaning.
If you have a valid clean cartridge loaded and Autoclean enabled your drive is covered. If/when it exceeds the error count to trigger a cleaning the library will handle the request.
If a cleaning was requested and the Clean media has expired the library will post a message.
Hope this helps...

That's actually not correct Bob. LTO drives do have a set cleaning mark.

If you refer to the cleaning section there is a table that lists the hours of use before the cleaning light is triggered on the drive. In the TL4000 you are either going to have LTO3 or LTO4 drives, here are the specs for those:
Dell PowerVault 110T LTO-3
40 full tape passes = 16TB or 8TB with verify enabled*
Dell PowerVault 110T LTO-4
40 full tape passes = 32TB or 16TB with verify enabled*

Excellent information indeed Calibrate300... I was unaware IBM had made a change to the cleaning algorithm in their LTO drives. Starting with LTO3 they have added a preventative clean time based on the amount of data the head has processed.
Thanks for digging up the spec and sharing on the forums.

is there a way to manipulate the database of expired-cleaning-cartridges in the TL4000 system? I put in a brand new one and it reports as expired right away... I wonder if the barcode number may have been in use before, I tried multiple - but I cant find ANY place where I can check this stuff?

HI ..
I also have an issue concerning the cleaning tape 50 uses.
The tapes come all with label "CLNU001"
So even if I insert a brand new tape it still says "Cleaning Tape Expired 51 uses"
How can I reset this on the TL4000?
I have read the manual and cannot find any information about that.
If I cannot reset this ... how do I still use the "autoclean" as currently the TL4000 does not want to use that tape.
Thanks
