Two MD3200 Storage Arrays to two Servers

I am wanting to connect two R710 servers to two Dell MD3200 Storage arrays, which will be clustered together to use storage spaces direct.

Is this a recommended configuration or should I be simply be connecting one array to one server?

Hello dwelldon,

You will not be able to use your MD3200 with storage spaces.  The reason is that your MD3200 has raid controllers in them and to use storage spaces you need to have HBA’s. Here is a link to Storage spaces direct system requirements. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/storage-spaces-direct-hardware-requirements

If you wanted to use an MD for storage then you would need to use either an MD1400 or an MD3060e.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello dwelldon,

You have HBA’s in your server that connect to the raid controllers in your MD3200.  With an MD3200 you must create a virtual disk & assign it to a host in order to see the space.  With an MD14xx or MD3060e you can see all the drives without needing to have a controller to create the virtual disk.  The only way to use an MD3200 is that you would need to get some EMM (Enclosure Management Modules) and insert them into your MD3200 to make it think it is an MD1200.
