Win 2003/SQL 2005 SAN Selection - 660F???

Hello,

I hope someone can help me out a bit, I currently am using IBM 335s as my servers and need to implement SAN into my configuration in order to have my web servers talking to 2 or 3 Ms SQL servers (Active/Active) which will be connected to SAN.

Buying new equipment is currently not possible due to the budget for this project, so I have been looking at the 660F but it seems as there is an issue with that...

Does anyone know if running Windows 2000 server with Microsoft SQL 2005 and the 660f would work - and allow for Active/Active mode?

Is there anything else hardware wise you could recommend besides the 660f that isn't too expensive?

Any suggestions would be appreciated:)

I would like to use two fiber switches and two HBAs per server for redundancy (any suggestions on HBAs?) and was also trying to figure out how I could build in second SAN as a fail over in case the first one dies but that is another issue :)

Due to the age of the equipment if your setup is going to be fairly critical, I'd recommend against using the PV660F for a high end production environment.

If you want to go ahead and try it anyway, you'll want to definitly follow the Dell SAN matrix for supported drivers, software and hardware.

The SAN 4.06 support matrix can be found here.

Mainly you'll need:
- a pair of Qlogic 2100 or 2200 HBAs (you mentioned you wanted active/active, so that requires 2 HBAs)
- Qlogic 7.05.08 drivers
- Qlogic 1.38 bios
- Dell OpenManage Array Manager (3.6 is the latest I believe)
- Qldirect 7.03.10

Windows 2003 support isn't readily documented on the Dell site, but there's been mention of a SAN 5.0 matrix, but this isn't listed on the Dell site that I've ever seen.
